VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Our entry-level volunteer hiring process is currently CLOSED.
We consider Certified Volunteer Firefighter applications throughout the year on a case-by-case basis.

CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER
South Whatcom Fire Authority (SWFA) considers applications for “Certified Volunteer Firefighters” on a continuous basis. A Certified Volunteer Firefighter must meet the following criteria to be considered for the program:
- Current WA State EMT-B certification
- WA State IFSAC Firefighter 1
- WA State IFSAC Hazmat Awareness
- WA State IFSAC Hazmat Operations
- Current or recent affiliation with a public Fire/EMS agency in Washington State (with references)
- *Note: Out-of-state certifications are not accepted for our Certified Volunteer Firefighter program at this time.
Successful applicants then must go through an oral board interview process, drug screening, criminal and driving background checks, and an occupational medical exam. The entire recruiting process takes about 90-120 days to complete.
Individuals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

All volunteer applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or GED by time of appointment.
RIDE-ALONG PROGRAM
We encourage prospective applicants to schedule a ride-along with us to get an inside look at day-to-day fire station life, and to provide an opportunity to ask questions of our members.
