It has been a long couple of years since our Sudden Valley fire station (Station 22) was damaged by a major pipe break. The timing was unfortunate that we were already preparing for a moderate renovation and replacement of a failing fire sprinkler system, but we were only in the early design phase. Our leadership team and Board of Fire Commissioners made the decision to try to accelerate the renovation project rather than repair the facility and then turn around and close it again for the larger planned renovation project. This unfortunately resulted in a longer than expected closure time due to architectural and engineering design, building permit processes, and complicated bid procedures for public agencies.
I am happy to report that after over two years, we are nearing final completion of the interior renovation and restoration of the Sudden Valley fire station! Our administrative team is planning to begin occupying the office portion of the building by the end of June, and our response personnel will be moved back into the facility shortly after. The renovated facility will have more functional spaces suited for a 24/7 staffed facility, which the original building was not designed for, and it includes many safety upgrades to keep our firefighters healthy throughout their careers. We are proud to announce that project cost will be completed under budget and provide a sustainable response facility for our community for decades to come.
