While not within SWFA’s jurisdiction, we aim to provide our community with accurate info related to significant incidents as our resources and personnel allow.
There is a significant wildland fire near the Hertz Trail, just north of Blue Canyon Rd. in the southeast part of Lake Whatcom. The incident is within DNR jurisdiction and that agency is in command of the incident. The local fire district, Whatcom County Fire District 18 (to our south) and Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management are coordinating with other partner agencies to control the fire and inform the public as they deem necessary. Level 2 Evacuations (as of 12:00 PM on 8/29/2023) are in effect for the Blue Canyon Rd. residents ONLY. No other areas are under any evacuation orders. Local residents near the fire should monitor media sources for the latest info and any change in evacuation level. All members of the public should avoid the fire area to allow fire crews to work.
There is no current threat to properties within the SWFA jurisdiction, and none are anticipated.
SWFA is providing support as requested, but please direct questions to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources or the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management directly.
Thank you,
Mitch Nolze, Fire Chief
